Led by Venezuelan guest conductor David Cubek, the Orange County Symphony (OCS) will present the fourth concert of its subscription season on Sunday, November 27, offering an evening of music by Latin American composers. The program will include the beloved Danzón No. 2 of Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, as well as his infectiously rhythmic Conga del Fuego Nuevo. Audiences will thrill to Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera’s Danzas del Ballet “Estancia,” a suite of four dances meant to represent the richness and variety of rural Argentine life. Silvestre Revueltas, like many Mexican progressives and intellectuals of his day, was outraged by the murder of the Federico García Lorca by Spanish fascists in 1936, and wrote his unflinchingly moving Homenaje (Homage) to the Spanish poet’s life and work in the months that followed. The Fuga con Pajarillo of pianist and composer Aldemaro Romero, on the other hand, takes the fugue, that most academic of musical compositions, and infuses it with one his native Venezuela’s most best-known traditional dance forms.

Founded in 1985, the Orange County Symphony is a regional semi-professional orchestra serving a metropolitan area of approximately 3 million people. The OCS is honored to be part of the Anaheim community and in July, 2011 was designated as the Resident Symphony Orchestra for the City of Anaheim. The orchestra will be conducted in this concert by accomplished Venezuelan conductor Dr. David Cubek, assistant professor of music and director of the Claremont Concert Orchestra in the Joint Music Program of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges. Dr. Cubek also regularly conducts ensembles from Venezuela's acclaimed music education program known as "El Sistema," and collaborates with Youth Orchestra of LA (YOLA), Gustavo Dudamel's initiative committed to providing intensive music training to underserved neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area.
